The Inn

This page refers to the Stephen family being fishermen but one of the same name farmed at Mains of Glenfarquar from whom I descend. I'm not sure of the distances. - Janet

From 1841-1915 William Stephen and his daughter ran the Inn. William was my 4x gt grandfather. His daughter Mary Ann married James Douglas Gove from Benholm and I have found many headstones and grave sites in this area for these families.
When my Aussie relatives visited The Creel Inn in 2010, the present owners were more than happy to show them the older parts of the building where once our family worked and lived. - Karen Fordyce

I am almost sure I have passed this way before but, having examined the 1841 and 1851 census again to find Violet Sheret at Mains of Catterline, I stayed awhile. Violet and her husband Hugh Sheret produced six children and one or more of them I am almost certain farmed Sillyflat; I know Sillyflat is still in operation today. I am however intrigued to know about the connection with Catterline but I can confirm that I do have the "Watt" name included in my records. - Janet

1916 fishermen of The Bella

I'm doing some research into the fishermen of The Bella - who were taken prisoner by the Germans in 1916. I wonder if you can suggest where I can find details regarding this topic.
Many thanks

Fish Curers

Hi there,
I found this article fascinating. I have just discovered that my Husband's Grt Grt Grandmother Susan Donaldson Cuthbert Lived here until her marriage to Robert Lees in 1878. Her father was a fish curer and his name was William Cuthbert. Susan moved down to Warrington with Robert which is near to where we live in Cheshire. I wonder if she missed the rugged coast and village community. She died in 1886 at only 36 years old. I would love to know more about her father and their life there.
